Out-of-network / Out-of-pocket Treament

Dr. McWilliams sees many patients outside of their insurance network, either as an out-of-network provider or out-of-pocket. There are several advantages to this depending on your circumstances:

  1. Improved privacy and confidentiality – Insurance companies require rigid documentation and perform frequent audits. Patients with a need for strict confidentiality like professionals or those with sensitive jobs may benefit due to increase flexibility with diagnosis and treatment options.
  2. Improved access to care – it can be very difficult to find a highly skilled psychiatrists that accepts insurance. Even if they do accept insurance, they may not be in-network with your plan. If this is the case, you may be able to utilize out-of-network benefits to still see Dr. McWilliams.
  3. Flexible treatment options – Insurances can limit the number and length of sessions patients may receive for mental health care. Seeking out-of-network or out-of-pocket care eliminates this restriction allowing for a more intensive treatment program.

Psychiatrist Columbia Maryland

Treatment will start with a thorough diagnostic evaluation. This will allow us to hone in on a specific diagnosis. I will take time to go over the diagnosis, my rationale for it, and any questions you may have about it during our initial session. Once a diagnosis is established, I will then offer you a wide range of personalized treatment options. These may include medications and psychotherapy.

In addition to medications and psychotherapy, I take a holistic approach to wellness. I incorporate lifestyle modifications that may include sleep hygiene, diet, exercise, social and relationship wellness, career development, and educational goals into the treatment plan in order to better assist my patients in achieving their goals.

My goal is to not only better control symptoms of mental illness, but to help patients thrive in their lives. In doing so, I seek to develop long-term positive therapeutic relationships founded on trust and collaboration.

Part of my practice includes offering consultation services and treatment recommendations to other healthcare providers in Maryland and Wisconsin to help their patients get the care they need.

I work with primary care physicians as part of an integrated care model. Using this model, I am able to offer diagnostic evaluations and initial treatment recommendations to make it easy for primary care doctors to treat their patients within their own clinic, without the need for long-term speciality follow up. Patients can visit me in-person in Columbia, MD. Or, these evaluations can be done virtually for those elsewhere in Maryland or Wisconsin.

I also offer consultations to other mental health providers for cases in which providers would like a second opinion or another set of eyes to reassess the diagnosis, and establish alternative treatment plans, if not making progress.
